BLM Rd 340 Dispersed Site
Near Canyonlands National Park, Utah
We were arriving midday on a Thursday in early May and thought we would be able to get a spot at Horsethief Campground near Canyonlands on BLM Rd 340. FORTUNATELY for us it was full because we might have never discovered this peaceful, private spot just down the road. We ended up spending 3 nights here and using it as a base camp to explore Canyonlands, Mineral Bottom & Moab. We mountain biked right from camp, and took a day trip and hiked Corona Arch - a must do....see below! These are our favorite types of sites, peaceful, private, no fees........ And with no leash restrictions for Mason they get his vote too!
Nearby Hikes and Activities:
Mineral Bottom Road - On the list of most dangerous roads?!?! This road is a feat of engineering...... cut into the hillside with scary tight corners and a pretty steep drop in elevation - but that didn't stop us from exploring it! I am glad we didn't have the camper on for this exploration. I don't have a picture that does it justice!
My Favorite thing about this photo is that I got out of the truck and then Steve drove up the road without me so I could get photo. My sweet Mason was so worried about me getting left behind he jumped out and ran back towards me......
Corona Arch Hike - The biggest downside to visiting National Parks is that our 4 legged "child" cannot explore with us. So travelling in the off season when the weather is cool enough that he can nap in the camper is something we have to do. However we also try to find things to do outside the parks and often they are just as wonderful, like this hike! Do not overlook this outside the park wonder, such few hikes offer such an amazing wow at the end as the Corona Arch Trail. The trail is 1.5 miles to the arch over slick rock with some scrambling with steel cables for support, and ladders to climb. The trail gains 440 feet in elevation.
