"Turkey Hole" Dispersed Site
Lyle, WA
Turkey Hole is actually an angler's water access site on the Klickitat River but it makes for a great dispersed campsite in winter while enjoying the wine areas of the gorge or post skiing at Mt Hood. Since it is free (as of 2018 for up to 14 nights) I would guess it can become quite busy at certain times of the year. We visited in Feb on a cold snowy weekend and there was only one other camper. There is a bathroom there also, but no running water.
Getting Here:
From SR 14 at Lyle take SR 142 north and Turkey hole will be 5 miles up on the left.

The Spit - Hood River, OR
The Spit is the perfect place to get out and stretch your legs and get the feeling of being at the beach just minutes from the city. Driftwood, shells, and enough sand to get in your shoes! Add to that the bonus of being dog friendly and we were right in our element. Mason loved digging in the sand, fetching, and playing in the water. If there is a leash rule..... there was not a single dog there who was following it!
Getting Here: From downtown follow N 2nd St towards the water and turn right on Riverside Drive, then another right on Nichols Parkway. The road will come to a stop and a left turn takes you out the narrow drive to the spit parking. Then walk wherever you like.
