Glacier Rim River Access
Not all spots are glamorous. And even experienced wanderers make mistakes when finding a camp spot. This is one of ours.... We left Whitefish, MT on a Thursday morning the week of 4th of July knowing how quickly Glacier National Park campgrounds fill up. This was not our first visit to the park after all. However as we were headed through Columbia Falls we spotted a car wash tall enough to give the rig a bath and we caved in and stopped. And here is our error.... This 15 minutes was the difference in us getting a campsite in Glacier National Park that day. As we pulled into the park the sign said there were still sites available at Avalanche Campground but by the time we drove through the park to the campground it was all filled up. Feeling a little defeated we headed outside the park and did a bit of driving around and eventually found this site. Nothing special, but it was free and it was fairly private and served our need for a one night stay. It is really just a spur road off the Glacier Rim River Access site. As a bonus, the access to the North Fork Flathead River here was really nice! We made a batch of our Campfire Fajitas and called it a night early so that we could get up early and head to the park to score a site..... And this time we were successful!
Getting Here:
From West Glacier, go West on US Hwy 2 approximately 2 miles. Then turn right on Lake 5 Rd and go about 3.3 mi. Lake 5 Rd then turns into Belton Stage Rd. After 1.5 miles you will then turn right on Blankenship Rd and go 6.6 miles to North Fork Rd and turn right on North Fork Rd. Once on North Fork Road you will go about 1.5 miles to the Glacier Rim River Access on the right. The little spur will be on the left after you take the access road. Going to google maps and looking at the satellite view gives you a good view of the spur road also.
