Kiwa Spring Rd, Mt. Bachelor Area, Bend, OR
This campsite was our base camp for several days of activities around Bend that included skiing, hiking, mountain biking and brewery tastings in late April. Winter camping is sometimes limiting for dispersed sites like this one due to lower elevation snow, and this one wasn't the most scenic we have ever had, but the location couldn't be beat for these activities. 11 miles outside Bend, and 11 miles from the Mt. Bachelor parking area. We woke up on the last morning to a fresh blanket of snow! There are pictures of two different visits, with two different campers pictured here.

Deschutes River Trail System
There are several different places to access this vast trail system for hikers, mountain bikes, and horses. We walked the trail portion between Big Eddy and Lava Island and mountain biked the Storm King trail from just below our camp to the Big Eddy area. In addition to the great scenery along the trail we saw river rafting groups and individual kayakers hit some good rapids near Big Eddy. For the Big Eddy parking area take the Cascade Lakes Byway out of Bend towards Mt. Bachelor and take Forest Service Rd 41 to the Left.
We even found Mason an area to do what he loves most.....Fetching balls by diving in the water!
How about this action sequence??
Horse Butte / Boyd Cave Mountain Bike
This was about 19 miles from our camp on the east side of Bend off China Hat Rd. It was about a 9 mile bike loop by combining a portion of the Coyote Loop Trail, the Boyd Cave cut over, and the Arnold Ice Cave Trail. We parked at the Horse Butte trail head and road clockwise on the loop. Midway through the ride we arrived at Boyd Cave and explored the underground cave via headlamps. We didn't find the Arnold Ice Cave, we will have to save that for another trip!
Getting Here: There are multiple routes to get to this trail head, a google search for the best route based on your starting location can be found by searching for Horse Butte trail head.
