Route of the Hiawatha..... East Portal Trailhead
This dispersed campsite sat at the base of the hill to the East Portal Trail head for the Route of the Hiawatha Bike Trail. There were several spots along the road in that you could park, but this spot was the best in our opinion. Nestled in the trees for shade, and sitting on the edge of a large green open field this site was a peaceful overnight spot before our morning bike ride. Mason loved the field for fetching tennis balls!
Route of the Hiawatha Bike Trail
A ride like no other! The Route of the Hiawatha bike trail is a 15 mile long trail on an old train line. It has 10 train tunnels and 7 train trestles, one of the tunnels is over 1.5 miles long in the pitch black darkness - you must have bike lights. The Trail is mostly downhill, maybe a little bit of flat areas, but literally no tough uphill peddling.... and at the bottom there are shuttle buses to take you back to the top! And crazy brave squirrels at the bottom while you wait for the shuttle bus!
