Detroit Lake State Park
This isn't our typical first choice of camping location types - but we were headed out on a week-long adventure and found a last minute cancellation in an otherwise fully booked super popular lakefront State Park. And... I think we snagged the best site.
Detroit Lake State Park is located along the north shore of Detroit Lake and offers a variety of campsites (nearly 300 of them), modern restrooms with electricity and showers, boat ramps, boat moorage and fishing dock. There are facilities for playing horseshoes, volleyball and basketball; two playgrounds and two designated swim areas. Firewood and ice are available for sale. The park's Visitor Center offers a free cup of coffee and an assortment of items for sale including: park souvenirs and apparel, games, educational books and toys. It is more like a resort than the camping we would normally choose, but for one night a great stop.
Cons....Campsites are very close together and those on the back side away from the water are right up against the highway.
A word of caution - while the nearby town of Detroit has gas and groceries.... do stock up before you head that way. The selection is VERY limited. Necessities are available, but if you are looking for blue cheese and buffalo sauce - you are out of luck!
